Lot 340: 1953 Porsche 356 Pre A Coupe 'GT Specification'
Légende et Passion Monaco, Coys (14th May 2005)
In 1949, Ferry Porsche began production of his first commercially available car, known as the 356, with a lightweight and aerodynamic body by Reutter Karosserie of Stuttgart and rear-mounted flat four engine. The layout of the car consisted of a unitary construction body/chassis of pressed steel and full independent suspension with rear swing axles and front trailing arms. A continuous development programme saw the introduction of new features, culminating in a 1500 engine with magnesium crank cases and a Hirth roller bearing crank, the ultimate version being known as the Super. The car was extensively raced with great success in such famous races as the Mille Miglia, where it won its class first time out and the Le Mans 24 hour where it proved itself as a reliable GT racer. Further success was achieved in North American races but perhaps most well known are its exploits in the gruelling Carrera Panamericana road race in Mexico. It is with deference to this model's achievements there that all subsequent Porsche Carrera's are named. The car offered here was built in 1953 and is therefore Mille Miglia eligible. To this end, during its comprehensive restoration, it was rebuilt to GT specification. The body was stripped to its bare shell and all suspension and drive components where reinforced for competition use. Now equipped with a roll cage, extinguishers and cut-offs, the car has GT seats covered in alcantara. Extensive mechanical work also included up-grade of the engine to 115 hp and the gearbox and brakes were strengthened to the later Carrera type cars. In addition the electric system has been upgraded to 12 Volts. These 'Pre A' 356 Porsche's have become in recent years much more collectible, the car we offer here is an extremely well presented car eligible for numerous historic events and tours.Cette voiture est prsente en parfaite tat, prte courir ou prendre la route, avec une bonne provenance et une histoire intressante.
