Lot 248: Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Split Window
Sports, Sports Touring, Competition & Grand Prix, Coys (8th August 2009)
The Corvette Sting Ray needs no introduction, it is without doubt a car which symbolised America in the 1960s and has always enjoyed a cult following. The Corvette has been described as one of the most desirable cars ever built, and has been applauded for its great style and engineering.
The Sting Ray was first introduced in 1963 and was a show stopper from day one. There have only been a handful of cars which have been able to create real excitement amongst the car industry during the 1960s - the Stingray was undoubtedly one of them.
The specification for the Corvette was a totally new venture, primarily because GM was working with a completely new chassis frame. The overall design of the body was also very striking and Sting Rays up to 1963 had the classic split screen at the back, which was controversially taken out due to safety concerns. The Stingray was also designed to have a new independent rear suspension designed by Allard and Porsche driver, Zora Arkus-Duntov. It was an all American car, but the engineering was by a man who had won his class at Le Mans and had a clear idea what a sports car should really be like. As a result all the Corvettes up to 1984 were using the same layout - a true testament to the cars brilliant design.
This 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Split Window is an early manual stick shift, and the vendor describes it as being in concourse condition. This comes as no great surprise as the previous owner had spent in excess of ¬ 130,000 on the restoration of this fabulous American icon, and as can be seen from the pictures the underside and engine bay are as immaculately presented as the rest of the car. Now offered for a fraction of the restoration costs, this is surely THE opportunity to purchase this most American classic.
