Lot 638: 1986 Cadillac Seville Elegante Sedan
Important Collectors' Motor Cars, and Motorcycles, Bonhams (4th December 2006)
Forced to recognise that the end was in sight for its traditional, ‘gas guzzling’ leviathans, Cadillac introduced a radical new model in 1975 – the Seville. Although the model name had been part of Cadillac’s lexicon for many years, on this occasion it was applied to a compact (by American standards) sedan powered by a mere 350cu in (5.7-litre) V8. Designated by its makers ‘international size’, the Seville eschewed the plush, boulevard ride of the traditional Cadillac in favour of more controlled, European-type handling characteristics. The second major revision of the Seville occurred for the 1986 model year, when an all-new design of thoroughly modern appearance was introduced. Shorter and lighter than before, the new Seville four-door sedan looked similar to the two-door Eldorado coupé and was powered by the same 4.1-litre fuel-injected V8. Although recognisably a member of the General Motors family, the Seville was luxuriously appointed and supremely well equipped in the best Cadillac tradition, boasting a host of desirable ‘extras’ as standard.
This Cadillac Seville Elegante was first owned by best-selling novelist Jackie Collins (sister of film star Joan Collins) and is offered for sale by her brother, its second owner from new. The Seville was supplied to special order on 26th June 1986 by Lou Ehlers Cadillac of Wilshire Boulevard and features Platinum Silver paintwork, grey leather interior, chromed wire wheels, touring suspension and Bose stereo system. Registered in Ms Collins’ married name, Jacqueline Lerman, it was used by her in Beverly Bills until she gave it to her brother in 1989. The car was shipped to England in October 1989 having covered approximately 9,000 miles and possesses a full service history since that date, including all MoTs, tax discs and maintenance bills. We are advised that the gearbox was reconditioned by the Automatic Transmission Centre in April 1994 at 14,345 miles and the engine rebuilt by Dakota Classics in January 1999 at 22,865 miles (following the failure of a camshaft lobe) while the cooling system has been modified by fitting Kenlowe fan switches to ensure cooler running. Well maintained, the car has covered circa 46,000 miles from new and is offered with Gold Pack keys (unused), all tools and handbooks, original California blue licence plates, current road fund licence, MoT to February 2007 and Swansea V5.
