Lot 228: 1986 Jaguar XJ-S 3.6-Litre Cabriolet

Jaguar�s first response to demands for an open-top XJ-S was somewhat conservative in engineering terms. The XJ-S had not been designed with an open version in mind, so a Targa-style arrangement was adopted, which retained a substantial roll hoop in the interests of maintaining rigidity in the absence of a fixed roof. Two removable roof panels were stored in the boot, and the Cabriolet did away with the Coup��s two occasional rear seats in favour of a pair of luggage lockers topped by a parcel shelf. Essentially an exercise in niche marketing to test public reaction, the XJ-S Cabriolet�s production was entrusted to outside specialist contractors, with bodyshells being transported back and forth across the Midlands before returning to the Brown�s Lane factory prior to final despatch. The favourable response to the Cabriolet having demonstrated that there was indeed sufficient demand to justify production of an open XJ-S, Jaguar grasped the nettle and proceeded to develop a conventional full convertible.
Supplied new by Caffyns, of Eastbourne and first registered on 15th January 1986, this superb XJ-S Cabriolet has enjoyed only one private owner from new and displays a warranted-correct total of only 16,718 miles on the odometer. The car is accompanied by an extensive file of history containing the original purchase invoice and registration document; number plate transfer details; 19 expired MoTs; Jaguar owners club valuation certificates (14 in total); spare keys; assorted letters of correspondence dating back to 1986; numerous service/maintenance invoices; and the original warranty card and stamped service booklet recording regular Jaguar main dealer service history.
Finished in Antelope metallic with dark fawn leather interior and black hood, this exceptionally low mileage car is in excellent condition throughout and comes complete with its original wheels, radio, hood cover, hood bag, tools, jack and spare wheel. The vehicle is offered with MoT to July 2009 and Swansea V5 registration document.
