Lot 367: 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Saloon
Collectors' Motor Cars & Automobilia, Bonhams (28th February 2005)
Introduced in January 1968, the 280S/SE saloon was the ‘entry level’ offering in Mercedes-Benz’s larger saloon range and shared its bodyshell with the 300SE. More luxuriously appointed than M-B’s smaller, less expensive models, the 280S/SE incorporated the host of advanced safety features that made these ‘New Generation’ cars so remarkable. The fuel-injected SE boasted slightly better fuel economy than the carburettor-equipped ‘S’ as well as superior performance, its 118mph top speed exceeding that of the latter by 3mph.
The vendor purchased this right-hand drive, automatic-transmission 280SE in September 2001 and reports that it has proved very reliable, running and driving well. Works carried out within the last six months include fitting a new oil cooler, exhaust system and tyres, and the car is described as in excellent order mechanically. The bodywork and paint, however, are in need of restoration, with welding required to eradicate rust visible on the front panel and floorpan. Finished in dark blue with light grey interior, the car has the desirable option of power-assisted steering. It displays a total of circa 94,000 miles on the odometer and is offered with assorted expired MoTs and Swansea V5 registration document.
