Hillman Imp engine

The Rootes group launched its answer to the BMC Mini in 1963, the rear engined Hillman Imp. Power for these small saloons came from a an all-alloy engine developed from a Coventry-Climax unit. Despite only having 875cc the Imp engine provided plenty of power and was matched to an equally good gearbox. Other sporty Imp versions were also sold as the more upmarket Singer Chamois Sport and Sunbeam Imp Sport/Stiletto. These sporty Imps used a tuned version of the standard Imp engine. It featured a high-lift camshaft, twin-carbs and developed 51bhp. |
