In 1995 at the Tokyo Show Honda displayed its SSM concept car that indicated Honda’s interest in a new generation of sports roadster. The concept was full of advanced thinking and included an X-box frame of immense rigidity, fully indpendent suspension and an engine mounted behind the front wheels.
Top speed was in the vicinity of 150mph which compared favourably with the Porsche Boxster and the BMW Z3. Handling was racecar-like in its precision - the S2000 was everything that buyers would have expected a new generation Honda sports roadster to be.
In 2004 production moved to Honda’s Suzuka plant where it received larger wheels, new tyres and modified suspension. A club racer edition was released in 2008
