After the success of the SJ models in Europe the company introduced the Vitara in 1988 to appeal to fashion and with better road performance and handling. The original hart top was followed by and soft top and then a long-wheelbase family estate in 1991. These models introduced four-wheel drive and other manufacturers followed suite. In the US the Vitara was marketed as a Sidekick which was so popular General Motors built it under licence at the Geo Tracker.
