In the twenty years between 1950 and 1970 Jaguar produced no fewer than six different big saloon ranges, although these in practice amounted to just two basic designs.

The first design covered the 1950s and began with the Mk VII, which became a Mk VIIM in 1954, a Mk VIII in 1956 and then a Mk IX in 1958. The second design covered the 1960s beginning with the Mk X in 1961, which in turn became 420G in 1966.

Running parallel with these big saloons after 1955 were the smaller sports saloons - The Mk I, Mk 2, S-type and 420 models. All of them, big saloons and sports saloons alike, were powered by the XK twin-cam, six-cylinder engine.

This is a book of contemporary road tests, new model introductions, specification and technical data, history, buying used. Models covered include: Mk VII, Mk VII Automatic, XK 120, Mk IIVM, Mk VIII, Mk IX, Mk IX Automatic, Mk X, Mk X 4.2, E-Type, Mk X Automatic, 420, 420G, Daimler Sovereign.
