Steyr had worked successfully with Fiat and a number of Fiat models have been built under licence. Finally the company developed a model of its own, the Steyr-Puch 500, yet this too was a Fiat 500 with a different engine block. This was the secret though of the car's success for the air-cooled twin-cylinder had become a boxer engine of 493 cc and power of 16 bhp at 4,600 rpm. There were also more powerful versions with 643 and 660 cc engines that had an output of 40 bhp. The excellent road-holding of the Fiat 500 made it convincingly successful and races are still being won by a Steyr-Puch.
