Various makes introduced a "compact" car in 1959. The Dodge model was the Dart. It was 208 in (5,290 mm) long with a 118 in (3,000 mm) wheelbase, making it a fairly large car (Mercedes 220 has a 2,750 mm (108 in) wheelbase). The car was significantly cheaper though than a big Dodge. The compacts could be delivered with a 3,682 cc six-cylinder engine or one of three V-8 power units ranging from 5.2-6.3 litres. More than 300,000 were sold in the first year of production.
