An all new model from Chrysler owned Hillman made its debut in 1970, the Hillman Avenger. The Avenger was a mid-size family saloon aimed directly at the Morris Marina, Ford Escort and Vauxhall Viva, all of which were relatively new models of a similar size. "Standard" trim models came with a choice of 1295cc, 1498cc or 1598cc four cylinder engines.

More sporting GT and GLS models were also offered along with competition bred Tiger and BRM versions. The "regular" Avenger models came with a choice of two and four door saloon bodies along with a useful estate version. The mechanical specification was hardly mould breaking and featured a standard practice (for the early 1970's) rear wheel drive layout with MacPherson Strut front suspension. Production of Hillman Avengers continued until 1976, from 1977 they were re-badged as Chrysler and later as Talbot Avengers.
